On 23 April 2009, the Flanders-China Chamber of Commerce organized a meeting and lunch in honor of the Mayor of Weihai, Mr Sun Shutao, and his delegation. Mr Bernard Dursin,

Member of the Board of Directors of the FCCC, welcomed the Mayor of Weihai, Mr Sun Shutao, and the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Belgium, HE Mr Zhang Yuanyuan.

The Ambassador stressed the importance of dynamic cities such as Weihai and encouraged participants to expand their cooperation with second and third-tier cities such as Weihai. The Mayor of Weihai, Mr Sun Shutao, and Mr Wang Baohua, Director of Weihai Municipal Bureau of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, introduced the opportunities for cooperation with Weihai.

The city of Weihai is situated in Shandong Province and has a population of 2.8 million. Weihai has a very solid industrial foundation. It has attracted a vast amount of foreign investment and over the next years, Weihai will largely focus on the further development of the following five industries:

   1. Shipbuilding and automotive industry
   2. Alternative energy, new lights sources, new materials and environmental protection equipment
   3. Pharmaceutical industry, healthcare and cosmetics
   4. Software and outsourcing industry
   5. Modern agriculture

Mr Patrick De Keyzer, Global Manager Technology, Quality and Manufacturing AWP SC, gave an interesting presentation on the experiences of Bekaert for investing in China. More information can be obtained at the FCCC.

The meeting was held at De Warande and was attended by over 30 participants.
