The Flanders-China Chamber of Commerce (FCCC) is organising an innovation and technology mission to China from 19 to 23 October 2009. The mission will visit Beijing, Chongqing and Shanghai.

During the mission, visits will be organised to universities, development zones, R&D centres, and Chinese and foreign companies involved with innovative technologies. The aim of the visit is to raise awareness about how to collaborate successfully on innovation and technology development and provide the right expertise and network in this field. This will provide a unique opportunity to find out how foreign companies can benefit from taking part in China’s ongoing innovation and research drive.

The role of China as the ‘factory of the world’ is one of the first images to spring to mind for many business people seeking business opportunities there. But over the past few years, China has also become ‘the laboratory of the world’. China spends a tremendous amount on research and development, targeting an R&D investment level of 2.5% of GDP by 2020.  China today is home to the R&D centers of most Global Fortune 500 companies, which are embedded in science and business networks in one of China’s 20 ‘Silicon Valleys’, comprising new and high-tech zones, science parks and/or innovation clusters, where  groundbreaking research is carried out into nanotechnology, biotechnology, space technology, materials technology, information technology and many other high-tech domains.

In the economic powerhouse of Chongqing, the delegation will participate in an international forum focusing on cooperation, innovation and development in sectors including energy efficiency and environmental protection; new-energy automobile technology, biotechnology, advanced manufacturing technology, and medicine.
