On 13 November 2008, the Flanders-China Chamber of Commerce held a workshop on Human Resources Strategies for Recruitment, Retention and Remuneration in China at De Warande in Brussels.

The FCCC was honoured to welcome the following speakers: Mr Christiaan Lebbink, Director of Boyden, Mrs Laura Tsui, Vice-President of InterChina Consulting, Mr Mark Goyens, Chief HR Officer of Bekaert and Mr Wigan Salazar, Managing Partner of Publicis Consultants.

The main conclusions of this workshop were:

Understand your environment: know the background of the country or the culture you are currently working in.

  • Make HR a general priority for the management, in other words, do not limit HR to the HR department.
  • Make a strong team of expatriates and local managers in order to increase your competitiveness.
  • Communicate frequently and properly. “Supposed to be understood” is not enough. Everything needs to be clearly written and communicated.
  • Make effort for creating a sound and strong company culture. Create a good work atmosphere. People management is the most important factor in retaining your workforce.
  • China is poised to become the design and research centre of the world. The multinational expansion in China is ongoing. The importance of adequate HR management is therefore of vital importance in this fast growing culture of industrialisation.
