DEME: shaping the planet and facilitating sustainable prosperity for 150 years

The Belgian dredging and hydraulic engineering group DEME NV has won a prominent position on the world market in a number of highly specialized and complex hydraulic disciplines. The Group has been a trend-setter and a pioneer in technical innovation throughout its 150 years of existence. Its historical core expertise is dredging, land reclamation and marine engineering. In that central area of activity, DEME has executed major marine engineering infrastructure works on all continents. These works include new ports, waterways, airports, artificial islands, reclamations for residential, commercial and industrial use, as well as basic infrastructure. DEME’s dredging business unit, Dredging International, has branch offices in Shanghai and Hong Kong to service on the Chinese market.

Beyond the traditional core business, the Group offers an impressive range of dredging-plus services that enables them to offer their clients global solutions for their projects and developments.

One major area of expertise where DEME has played a pioneering role is marine construction, notably the development, construction, foundation, installation and maintenance of large scale offshore wind farms. The Group spearheaded the development of the first large-scale offshore windfarms off the Belgian Coast, and has accumulated profound expertise in offshore wind farm construction. The Group currently boasts a market-leading position in Europe, particularly in the field of foundation installation, with a hyper-modern range of installation vessels to match. This expertise in the development of offshore renewables is made available to Chinese clients through COSCOCS-DEME New Energy, a joint venture with the world’s largest shipping concern, COSCO-CS.

Other dredging-plus services include environmental remediation, services to the oil and gas industry, the mining of marine minerals and aggregates, and the supply of maritime support services. DEME also acts as a project development investor.

The multidisciplinary capabilities of the Group and the synergies between activities in many projects have enabled DEME to become a global solutions provider. Beyond China, DEME has created a network of offices and agencies in over 90 countries worldwide. The Group has a permanent, internationalized workforce of 4500 dedicated staff, and can draw on a hyper-modern fleet of 100 main works vessels, backed by a broad range of auxiliary equipment, to propose the most efficient solutions to its clients. DEME realized a turnover of EUR 2.53bn in 2015.
